The One with the Radio Play

13 September 2004

E-BARD 11 - A RADIO PLAY VERSION - BY BENITO DI FONZO.

BARDFLYS
Okay kids, it's time to put your drinking caps back on, change the Reg Grundies, and tie your mother down for another Tuesday night of poetry, song, heckling, microphone/pa breakages and 'high' art that is Bardflys!

PROLETARIAT
What are you on about? And put that duck down.

SFX: chicken.

BARDFLYS
Uhm, I just meant to make clear, if I could, and unaccustomed as I am to public speaking...

PROLETARIAT
Get to the point man!

SFX: Bardflys being hit with mint walrus.

BARDFLYS
The poetry gig's on again this
Tuesday at The Friend In Hand Hotel, Cowper St. Glebe. around 8 ish, you know?

PROLETARIAT
Well, we DID put ourselves on the mailing list, and we most likely did that at the gig, so, yes, we do know that, so tell us who's on, and for the final time - leave that chicken alone!

SFX: soft vermilion tears.

BARDFLYS
Yes, you're right. I'm sorry, it's just that I thought I gentle reminder might get you to...

PROLETARIAT
Get on with it man!

BARDFLYS
Yes, where was I.

PROLETARIAT
Who's on!

BARDFLYS
Oh, right, well, this week, we have the incredible Lewis Scott all the way from the USA, at no small expense to Bardflys mind you...

AUDIENCE: cheers!

PROLETARIAT
At no small expense?

BARDFLYS
No.

PROLETARIAT
So, it was expensive?

BARDFLYS
Well, no.

PROLETARIAT
He made his own way here didn't he?

BARDFLYS
Yes. Yes he did.

PROLETARIAT
Now... look at me when I'm talking to you.

SFX: Tuesday at The Friend In Hand!

BARDFLYS
Sorry.

PROLETARIAT
The chicken will still be here when we're finished.

BARDFLYS
Yes, yes it probably will.

PROLETARIAT
Is Dumbly back?

BARDFLYS
Who?

PROLETARIAT
Dumbly, Tug Dumbly.

AUDIENCE: cheers!

BARDFLYS
Oh, yeah, he is. That's right. But the infinitely more handsome witty and dashing Benito will also be there, hosting the slam as always.

AUDIENCE: cheers!

PROLETARIAT
The sleazy fat Wog with the drinking problem, yes, I remember him.

BARDFLYS
And the sexiest band ever to set foot outside of the womb - Peppermint Tea will also be on day release for the evening.

AUDIENCE: WOOPS, HOLLERS, BATHOS!

PROLETARIAT
Fantastic! I happily mortgage my grandmother for such an evening.

BARDFLYS
Well, you won't have to, because it's only $2/3 dollars (suggested donation, batteries not included) to envelope oneself in said high artistic splendour in the Montparnasse of Tuesday evenings in Sydney - Bardflys! at The Friend In Hand.

PROLETARIAT
Fantastic! Now where's that chicken?

SFX: chicken.

BARDFLYS
Oh, and don't forget Benito's...

PROLETARIAT
The sleazy drunken Wog guy that hosts the slam?

BARDFLYS
Yes, Benito's play 'The Strange Case of the Parrot & The Stolen Sydney Opera House' starring Tug Dumbly as Napoleon Hangover, Brendan Cowell as several people, as well as Kate Mulvany, Damon Herriman, with live Radiophonic SFX by Miles Merrill, all live at The Studio at The Opera House this Sunday (with DJ Jack Shit and audience warm-up stuff from 8pm, then going LIVE TO AIR on Fbi 94.5 FM, & www.fbiradio.org.au, from 9pm) only $15/20 to be there, or FREE to listen to on radio/internet!

SFX: people hastily booking at sydneyoperahouse.com/thestudio or on 9250 7777, whilst tuning their pacemakers to 94.5 FM.

PROLETARIAT
That was a pretty blatant plug.

BARDFLYS
Yes it was wasn't it.

PROLETARIAT
Where could you go from there?

BARDFLYS
I could insist that, after listening to this masterpiece you ring every radio station in Australia and insist Benito be given a regular serial at ASA Award rates.

PROLETARIAT
Nothing else.

BARDFLYS
No, just the chicken.

PROLETARIAT
See you Tuesday then...

BARDFLYS
Whatever.

SFX: cheering chickens.
